Today I completed the switch over from Eudora to Mozilla Thunderbird. I’ve actually been happy with Eudora for years and have happily upgraded from versions 4 to 5 to 6 then 6.1 . However lately I’ve started using imap instead of pop3 and imap seems to be a bit broken in Eudora 6.1 . Apparently Eudora 6.2 has improved imap functionality however I have to pay to upgrade as my last upgrade was over 12 months ago. Now I’m happy to buy new versions of software if they are going to give me significant new features however I’m not comfortable forking out to buy a 0.1 version jump just to get a bug fix. So for the time being I’m giving Thunderbird a spin.
As far as my initial impressions go it seems to be up to the job. However it is different enough to drive me nuts occasionally. After a 1/2 an hour of tweaking I’ve managed to sort of “Eudora-ize”” it and I’m back in my comfort zone. IMAP has had no problems at all. I could miss Eudora’s filters however since I’ve gone all “gtd“” in the last 6 weeks, filters have become fairly redundant. I do miss Eudora’s “”unformat text”” button as it was a great way to clean up stray html tags etc but you can do something similar by ‘cutting’ the text then use ‘Paste without formating’.
Anyway I guess I’ll stick with it until Eudora 7 launches then consider my options from there.
